NZHELELE DAM STABILITY INVESTIGATION AND HYDROLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

JG Afrika investigated the stability of the Nzhelele dam in Limpopo by using non-linear finite element analysis and developed design alternatives based on the results.

The investigation included assessments of the foundation, pre-stress cables and erosion resistance, in addition to comprehensive geological investigations.

We also evaluated alternatives to increase the spillway capacity, which has been documented as under-sized since the overtopping of the dam wall in 2000.

A full hydrological assessment was required to establish the most up-to-date flood flow regimes.
