Geotechnical

Our experienced team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists have the in-house support of civil and structural engineers to enhance our geotechnical capacity and ensure that we can tackle any project, from site investigations through to complex foundation and lateral support designs. When it comes to geotechnical investigations for railways, roads, dams, slope stabilisation, ground improvement, multi-storey buildings or renewable energy projects, we have the capacity and capability to take projects from initiation, through design to construction. In addition, our engineering geologists have many years of experience in the reconnaissance, identification and investigation of sources of construction materials, which ensures cost-effective solutions for earthworks construction for roads and dam projects.

The geotechnical professionals are involved in site investigations which range from feasibility studies to detail designs and include road and railway centreline investigations, construction materials sourcing (the identification of borrow pits and quarries), slope stability assessments, engineering geological mapping and the compilation of land use mapping plans. Our professional team are accredited to the NHBRC and can certify Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies in terms of the Department of Human Settlements guidelines. We have the required expertise to undertake foundation investigations for wind and solar farms, including the analysis of the effects of dynamic loading on the structures.

Geotechnical Investigations

  • Feasibility studies to detailed design
  • Road and railway centreline investigations
  • Construction material sourcing
  • Embankment and concrete dams
  • Slope stability assessments
  • Engineering geological mapping
  • Land utilisation plans
  • NHBRC Housing Phase 1 and 2 studies
  • Cemetery site studies
  • Wind and solar foundation studies.

The geotechnical design team can assist with the detail design of shallow and deep foundations, ground anchors and soil nailing and lateral support for deep basements. They have expertise in ground improvement solutions including accelerated consolidation and dynamic compaction. The have undertaken a number of designs for small and large earth and rock fill dams, including foundation grouting and the design of long-term monitoring plans.

Design

  • Shallow and deep foundations
  • Ground anchors
  • Lateral support systems
  • Cuttings and embankments
  • Earth embankment dams
  • Basements
  • Ground improvement.

The geotechnical team has undertaken construction monitoring for large infrastructure projects such as the construction of new dams, repairs to existing dams, road and rail projects, and the installation of deep piles and accelerated consolidation projects. The team has been involved with the supervision of the construction of pollution control dams, landfill sites and the placement of geosynthetic liners, as well as lateral support in the form of rock bolts and soil nails.
