Energy

Clean energy and energy from renewable sources need to take centre stage in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. JG Afrika has worked with many international renewable energy technology specialists in various capacities on prominent solar and wind projects and there is no doubt that there is huge potential for the country to extend its “green” energy development agenda. For example, biomass could be introduced to the country’s national grid. This is an area of expertise where we have gained a head start through our extensive involvement in the first large-scale waste-to-energy plant in Africa.

We offer multi-disciplinary professional services pertinent to the renewable energy sector through the combined experience of our project managers, civil, structural, geotechnical, traffic and transportation engineers together with our geological scientists, environmental practitioners and geohydrologists. JG Afrika has been very involved in the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP) and have provided professional services on solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, onshore wind farms, concentrated solar power (CSP) stations and waste-to-energy centres.

We have undertaken numerous energy-from-waste materials projects in collaboration with private and public investors and project developers. These include biomass/organic material as a feed in energy generation, which ranges from smaller commercial scale plants to industrial scale operations where energy is generated for industrial usage and the grid. JG Afrika views waste-to-energy as part of an integrated intervention with energy from other sources as well, such as wind or solar energy. Many of these interventions are technically advanced and our specialists offer the skills and expertise required to assist developers and implementers to understand contract risks, technical risks, financial risks and opportunities for job creation and upskilling or learnership.

  • Co-creation and co-development of project opportunities
  • Technical, environmental and specialist contributions to development of project partnerships
  • Studies, strategic planning, business planning
  • Facilitation of project conceptualisation and decision making
  • Administration and management of project implementation
  • Contract documentation and risk management development

Our transport and traffic engineers have vast experience of involvement with transport studies for renewables energy projects (wind energy, solar PV, CSP, biogas, waste-to-energy). Transport studies are an integral part of the application process of any renewable energy project, as they include the investigation of feasible routing from port of entry to site, feasible haulage vehicles, accessibility to the project site, correspondence with the authorities and the project team, input into internal access roads, impact on external roads and assessment of risks along the transport routes. Our transport engineers offer comprehensive and experienced input into the implementation of a renewable energy project.

Traffic and Transportation

  • Transport Risk Assessments, including logistics aspects, route limitations, permitting.
  • Transport Impact Studies as part of an Environmental Impact and/or Basic Impact Assessment process.
  • Input into site internal access road layouts and laydown areas
  • Investigation of suitable access points from a transport planning perspective
  • Correspondence with relevant Authorities for approvals.
