DURBAN SOUTHERN GATEWAY

The JG Afrika and Tifflin Purchase joint venture was responsible for the conceptual, preliminary and detailed design, as well as construction monitoring of two contracts to improve the freeway interchange adjacent to the old Durban airport.

The work scope included lengthening the two existing bridges on the N2 to facilitate the new access to Umlazi, as well as the construction of four new bridges.

We widened the Himalayas Road Bridge on the Southern Freeway; lengthened the existing road box culvert; and built reinforced concrete, reinforced earth and Loffelstein retaining walls.

Five new access ramps were constructed and the southern freeway between Himalayas Road widened.

Our scope of work included the relocation and relaying of electricity and Telkom cables; water mains and sewer pipelines, as well as the provision of storm-water drainage pipe networks, overhead sign gantries, street lighting and traffic signals.
