Koeberg Interchange Upgrade

JG Afrika

SAICE Award: 2011-2012 Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievement (Joint Winner)

Client: Provincial Government of the Western Cape, Department of Roads and Public Works
Project team: Lead consultant HHO Africa, with sub-consultants JG Afrika, Bergstan and Asch
Contractor: Paarden Eiland Joint Venture (Group Five and Power Construction)

JG Afrika was a member of the professional team that undertook the R710 million upgrade of the Koeberg Interchange which sought to alleviate the congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest interchanges. The unique project, completed in July 2011 after a 42-month construction period, required the construction of two new directional ramps at a third level over the old interchange, while maintaining the existing traffic flow of 200 000 vehicles per day.

Excellent co-operation between client, engineer, contractor and service authorities overcame the numerous challenges and ensured the completion of the project ahead of the contract completion date and within budget.

Innovative, “just in time” design, approval and tender processes were adapted to achieve the extremely tight time constraints imposed by the need to open Ramp A before the 2010 World Cup.

The works consisted of the two flyover ramps, requiring realignment of the Salt River canal and widening of the M5 northbound from Berkley Road to the Koeberg Interchange. Included were two additional outgoing lanes and one additional incoming lane on the N1, street-lighting and landscaping.
