JG Afrika, a leading consulting engineering firm with over a century of experience, has once again been recognized for excellence at prestigious industry awards.
Climate Resilient Water Safety Planning (CRWSP) Project, Azerbaijan

The Climate Resilient Water Safety Planning (CRWSP) Project in Azerbaijan won the 2024 SAICE Award for Outstanding Investigative Project of the Year, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Led by JG Afrika’s team including Mark Summerton (Technical Director), Giselle Pillay (Civil Engineer), and Shuaib Peer (Civil Technologist), the project supported the Azerbaijan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) and the national water utility, Azersu, in developing and implementing a CRWSP for urban and peri-urban water supply systems.
Key achievements included:
-
Integrating water safety planning into regular operations.
-
Institutionalising CRWSP for the Zenglihan internally displaced people (IDP) settlement to ensure safe, reliable water supply amid climate variability.
-
Raising awareness of climate change impacts and safe water handling at the household level.
-
Providing risk-based scientific evidence and a bankable improvement plan to enhance system resilience and water safety.
This award highlights JG Afrika’s expertise in sustainable water management, risk assessment, and climate resilience.
Coastal Park Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Cape Town
JG Afrika’s Coastal Park Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was a finalist in the Technical Excellence category and won Highly Commended in the AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction at the 2024 Construction Best Project Awards.
Led by Richard Emery (Associate) and Byron Mawer (Executive Associate), the project demonstrated remarkable design innovation in civil engineering. The MRF was constructed atop a historical solid waste deposit — a challenging, contaminated brownfields site.
Innovative solutions included:
-
A novel ground improvement design combining dynamic compaction, engineered fill, and geogrid to create a stable platform.
-
Material reuse strategies, transforming builder’s rubble into engineered fill.
-
Strategic planning for future landfill gas-to-electricity conversion.
This project exemplifies JG Afrika’s commitment to sustainable construction, advanced engineering solutions, and environmental responsibility.
