Client: Department of Environmental Affairs / Deutsche Gersellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)

JG Afrika and international waste consultant RWA developed a strategy to help six selected South African municipalities divert organic waste from their landfill sites – thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This was a flagship project for the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

A thorough analysis of the waste streams entering each landfill helped provided information for short-, medium-, and long-term generic interventions.

In addition to identifying alternative interventions and selecting best suited scenarios, based on applicability, appropriateness and affordability (AAA). We also drafted practical and financially-viable business, as well as implementation plans, while assisting with the applications for funding for the capital requirements.

The project model will be rolled out to other municipalities in South Africa.
