With over 32 years of experience, Mark Schapers is a highly respected hydrogeologist and geologist who has led and contributed to a wide array of earth science-based projects across Southern and East Africa. A registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.), he holds an MSc in Hydrogeology from the University of the Free State and has spent more than two decades at JG Afrika, where he currently serves as a Technical Director.
Mark specialises in geohydrology, groundwater resource development and management, geology, and project management. His in-depth understanding of aquifer systems; particularly the KZN Coastal Flats Aquifer; has informed regional conceptual models and continues to support postgraduate research at multiple South African universities.
His expertise spans groundwater supply and sanitation, environmental authorisations, aquifer mapping, managed aquifer recharge (MAR), groundwater monitoring, and modelling. He has played a key role in high-profile projects across South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zambia, and Ethiopia, working at both village and transboundary levels. Recent highlights include his role as groundwater lead on USAID’s Ethiopia Urban WASH project and AMCOW’s pan-African Groundwater Strategic Programme.
Mark also manages JG Afrika’s Durban, KwaZulu-Natal office, overseeing a multidisciplinary team. His work is characterised by a strong focus on sustainable groundwater use, innovation, and the advancement of appropriate technologies within the WASH sector.
He is an active member and leader in several professional associations, including the Groundwater Division of the Geological Society of South Africa (GWD/GSSA), the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), and the Groundwater Association of KwaZulu-Natal (GAKZN).
