Mark Summerton is a Technical Director at JG Afrika, leading the firm’s Hydrology and Climate discipline from its Pietermaritzburg office. As a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr Sci Nat) and Geomatics Professional (GPrGISc), Mark brings over 25 years of expertise in hydrology, water resources management, WASH, climate resilience, and bankable water investment planning. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing sustainable and climate-resilient water solutions across South Africa, the Middle East, and multiple African nations.


Recognized for his contributions, Mark has received prestigious accolades, including the Environmental and Water Resources Institute’s International Fellowship for exemplary work in the field, and the South African Institution of Civil Engineers’ Investigative Project of the Year for spearheading a climate-resilient water safety plan in Azerbaijan for UNICEF.


Mark has successfully led complex, multi-country initiatives, such as Ghana’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for climate-resilient energy and the Nile Equatorial Lakes Investment Programme (NELIP), strengthening water security, livelihoods, and economic development across nine countries. 


His extensive work in the water utility sector has ensured the long-term sustainability of water resources through strategic planning, climate adaptation, and infrastructure optimization. As a WASH Specialist for UNICEF, Mark drove the development of Climate Resilient Water Safety Plans, influencing national policies with evidence-based research on climate impacts.


Driven by a commitment to climate-resilient development, Mark integrates science, policy, and implementation to safeguard communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure against environmental challenges. His strategic leadership and collaborative approach ensure innovative, high-impact solutions that secure water sustainability and resilience for future generations.
