Jefrey Pilusa is a Technical Director at JG Afrika (Pty) Ltd, bringing over 18 years of specialised experience in Solid Waste Management, Process Engineering, Energy Efficiency, and Sustainability. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s in chemical engineering, with a focus on alternative fuels and energy.
His academic achievements are complemented by his professional registrations: he is a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) with ECSA, an International Professional Engineer (Int PE-SA), and a Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) with the UK Engineering Council and IChemE.
Jefrey has led numerous high-impact projects across South Africa and internationally, providing technical direction on biogas, waste-to-energy, and renewable energy initiatives. His expertise lies in integrating waste management with energy transition strategies, developing sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact while promoting resource efficiency.
He has managed feasibility studies, process design, and implementation support for clients ranging from local municipalities and schools to international organisations such as GIZ, UNIDO, and the DBSA. Key projects include the Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant rehabilitation, waste diversion centres in Kampala, energy efficiency assessments for the IDC, and feasibility studies for refuse-derived fuel and plastic recovery initiatives. Jefrey has also led various energy projects within the manufacturing industries such as Cement, Phosphates, Gypsum, Sugar Bricks for the displacement of hydrocarbon fuels for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Saudi Arabia.
Jefrey also has extensive experience in landfill management, GRAP 19 compliance, anaerobic digestion systems, and filtration technology. Prior to joining JG Afrika, he worked at FL Smidth, GKD-Delkor and Enviroserv Waste Management, where he applied academic research to practical engineering challenges for SMEs and the broader industry.
His work continues to shape sustainable engineering practices across Africa and beyond.
In his spare time, Jefrey enjoys spending time with his family, hiking and sometimes road running. Jefrey is passionate about mentoring young professional and synthesising agro material into products.
