Richard Emery is a Technical Director and Civil Engineering Technologist with 27 years of experience in integrated solid waste management, municipal infrastructure, and civil engineering. Richard is a registered Pr Tech Eng and Pr CPM, Richard holds a BTech in Urban and Rural Development and has spent the last 17 years at JG Afrika, where he leads small and large-scale, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
Richard’s career began with in-service training in Johannesburg, Lesotho Highlands Water Project, UCT Research & Development and expanded during his 11-year tenure at BKS (now AECOM), followed by his longstanding contribution to JG Afrika.
His expertise spans technical design, project management, cost control, risk management, and the development of public-private partnership frameworks. A key strength lies in his commitment to appropriate, applicable, and affordable engineering solutions; grounded in systems-thinking and municipal integration for long-term sustainability.
Richard has worked extensively across South Africa and the continent.
He has presented technical papers at local and international forums and received industry recognition, including the SAICE Technologist of the Year (2019), multiple SAICE National Awards, and the CESA Engineering Excellence Award. In 2020, Richard was honoured with a Fellow Membership at SAICE.
On a less serious note, Richard enjoys trail running (although is rubbish at it), getting ready for “empty nest syndrome” as his 2 children move to study/work next year. Richard also is part of Search & Rescue (SARZA) and has been part of some interesting rescues…
