Jan Norris is a Director at JG Afrika with over 30 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, specialising in investigations, foundation design, and solid waste management.

 

She holds an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering and is a professionally registered engineer, with additional qualifications in environmental management. Jan began her career on-site as a site agent for an earth embankment dam in Zimbabwe and later joined Thames Water in London, where she refined her skills in geotechnical design and site investigations.


Since joining JG Afrika in 1996, Jan has led geotechnical and environmental projects locally and internationally. Her work includes landfill siting and design, as well as investigations for dams, pipelines, roads, bridges, water treatment works, and deep foundations. She has contributed to projects across Southern Africa, the UK, Ireland, and the DRC.


Appointed as a Director in 2004, Jan’s notable roles include Chief Engineer for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority on Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, overseeing geotechnical investigations for the Polihali Dam and Transfer Tunnel and acting as the FIDIC Engineer.


She has also served as Geotechnical Design Specialist on major SANRAL projects, including sections of the N2 and N3 highways. Jan is a long-time external examiner at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and sits on the Advisory Board for the Civil Engineering Department. She is a former Chairperson of the SAICE Pietermaritzburg branch and was elected as a SAICE Fellow in 2021.


Outside of work, Jan enjoys hiking, road and trail running, exploring new countries, and spending quality time with family. She also loves watching live music whenever she can.
