The role spans the full project lifecycle—from planning and feasibility through detailed design, tender documentation, construction support, and project close-out.
The successful candidate will provide strong technical leadership in pavement engineering, mentor project teams, engage with clients and authorities, ensure compliance with South African standards, and contribute to commercially sound project delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Pavement Design
- Lead the analysis, design, and rehabilitation of flexible, rigid, and composite pavements for roads, highways, intersections, and associated infrastructure.
- Undertake pavement evaluations, including interpretation of traffic data, materials investigations, deflection testing, and performance assessments.
- Develop and review pavement design reports, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical memoranda.
- Apply relevant standards and guidelines including SANRAL, TMH (TMH 1, TMH 7, TMH 9), COTO, SANS, and municipal requirements.
- Conduct technical risk assessments, constructability reviews, life-cycle cost analyses, and value engineering studies.
- Have a working knowledge of pavement management systems and the implementation thereof.
Project Delivery & Management
- Plan and manage scope, programme, resources, budgets, and deliverables for pavement-related project components.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including geometric design, drainage, geotechnical, traffic, and structural disciplines.
- Prepare and manage tender documentation, technical specifications, BOQs, and respond to contractor queries.
- Provide construction-phase services including site inspections, pavement layer approvals, method statement reviews, NCR resolution, and as-built verification.
Team Leadership & Mentoring
- Lead and mentor engineers, technologists, and technicians involved in pavement design and construction monitoring.
- Review technical work, set design standards, and contribute to internal QA/QC procedures.
- Chair or participate in technical and design coordination meetings.
Stakeholder & Client Management
- Act as the primary pavement engineering contact for clients and stakeholders.
- Present design solutions, technical findings, and recommendations to clients and approving authorities.
- Liaise with road authorities and municipalities to obtain approvals and ensure compliance.
- Support business development through proposal preparation, fee estimates, and tender submissions.
Governance, Quality & Safety
- Ensure compliance with the company’s Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and the ECSA Code of Conduct.
- Maintain accurate technical records, reports, correspondence, and project documentation.
- Promote safety, quality, and best engineering practice throughout all project phases.
