Senior Civil Engineering Design Technician – Roads & Stormwater – Johannesburg (Ref JHB0103)

We are seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineering Design Technician with 8–10 years’ proven experience to support and deliver multidisciplinary civil infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on geometric road design, stormwater design, drafting, road sign design, and road marking design.
The successful candidate will play a key role in technical delivery from concept and feasibility through detailed design, tender documentation, and construction support. You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality, compliant, and constructible design outputs aligned with South African and international standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Design & Drafting

  • Prepare and develop geometric road designs (horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sections, intersections, access roads).
  • Design and detail stormwater drainage systems, including pipes, channels, culverts, manholes, kerbs, inlets, attenuation, and erosion control measures.
  • Produce high-quality engineering drawings, layouts, and details for roads, stormwater, and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Prepare road sign designs and road marking layouts in accordance with the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual (SARTSM) and relevant authority requirements.
  • Apply and ensure compliance with relevant standards and guidelines, including SANRAL, SANS, TMH, COTO, municipal by-laws, and client specifications.

Quality, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure all drawings and design outputs comply with the company’s Quality Management System (ISO 9001).
  • Maintain accurate design records, drawing registers, and document control.
  • Conduct internal checks and assist with design reviews prior to issue.

Mentoring & Team Support

  • Provide guidance and mentoring to junior technicians and CAD operators.
  • Assist in maintaining drafting standards, CAD procedures, and best practices within the team.

Qualifications:

• National Diploma / BTech in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• ECSA registration as a Professional Engineering Technician (Pr Techni Eng) or active progress toward registration (Cand Pr Techni Eng)

Experience:

• 8–10 years’ post-qualification experience in civil infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience in road geometric design, stormwater design, drafting, road signage, and road marking design.
• Experience working on projects for municipalities, provincial roads authorities.

Skills:

• Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
• Sound understanding of South African road and stormwater design standards.
• Ability to interpret engineering designs and translate them into accurate construction drawings
• A valid driver’s license
