DESIGN FOR THREE STORY BASEMENTS FOR SIX STOREY PRIVATE RESIDENCE

We were appointed as civil and structural engineer for a five storey private residence in Ocean View Drive, Cape Town.

Bulk earthworks of 5000 m3 of cut created two new basement parking levels, with extensive waterproof retaining walls and terraforcing. This was followed by construction of four floors of complex concrete structure including suspended gardens and swimming pools.

The top two storeys consist of cantilevering off-shutter concrete and structural steel elements. This required post-tensioning of concrete and, in the case of the “catenary slab”, pre-cambering and pre-loading of structural steel before concrete cladding in order to achieve an 18 m span of a thinnest possible profile of 350mm.
