NACALA DAM WALL RAISING AND REHABILITATION IN MOZAMBIQUE

Following an international competitive tendering process, the US$28 million Nacala Dam project in Mozambique was awarded to WBHO contractors who appointed JG Afrika to undertake the feasibility study and detailed design of the works.

We also supervised construction in association with its sub-consultant, Lamont Consultants of Zimbabwe.

The works involved the raising of the existing dam wall, the diversion of the national road from its current alignment over the dam wall crest, the construction of an uncontrolled ogee horseshoe-shaped spillway, and the installing of a new outlet works and pump station to deliver increased capacity to a new water treatment works.

Improvements were also made to the outlets to allow environmental compensation flows to be released downstream.

Parallel to this construction work, JG Afrika, together with our local partners, Conseng, implemented the resettlement of some 20 families affected by the works, either through cash compensation or through the construction of alternative housing at locations chosen by the affected families. This followed extensive consultation during the design stage.

The project was funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation of the USA.
