This portion of the N4 between Rustenburg and Swartruggens in the North West Province, some 50 kilometres, forms part of the main National Route between Gauteng and Botswana. The existing road was some 50 years old, required geometric upgrading to meet new standards and pavement strengthening with stormwater management improvements.

Substantial pavement strengthening to meet a 30 year design period was implemented and involved the ripping and recompacting of the existing selected layers, recycling the existing subbase, constructing a new crushed stone base, and a new double seal surfacing.

Construction was carried out in half-widths with temporary widening to ensure that two-way traffic was maintained during construction.
