MKOMAAS RIVER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

We were appointed by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Transport to design the Mkomaas River pedestrian bridge.

The bridge was the first pre-stressed ribbon bridge in Africa and its clear span of 150 m equalled the world record for this type of structure.

It comprises a ribbon of precast concrete elements that are suspended from cables tensioned between abutments. The elements are joined and compressed in the long direction of the bridge by tensioning a second set of cables placed in ducts through the elements.
