ESKOM COAL ASH DISPOSAL FACILITY

JG Afrika provided technical engineering input as part of the waste management license application for a proposed ash disposal facility at an Eskom-owned powerstation in accordance with the prescribed national legislation.

The project involved classifying the ash waste in accordance with national legislation and guidelines, on-site investigation of temperatures within the existing ash landfill and undertaking a detailed geotechnical slope stability analysis evaluating the stability of the ash landfill at extreme heights.

The scope of work included a detailed review of the current design and operation of the existing ash landfill, the preparation of a technical design review report, input into the environmental management programme, classifying the waste in terms of the appropriate legislation, the preparation of an operational plan, undertaking on-site thermal testing, developing a geotechnical assessment including geotechnical slope stability modelling for the new proposed ash disposal facility.
