We worked with the University of Johannesburg to determine the potential impact of acid mine drainage (AMD) on the aquatic invertebrate communities of ephemeral wetlands in three South African provinces.

The main aim of the project, funded by the Water Research Commission, was to investigate whether egg banks of invertebrates of the class Branchiopoda would hatch after exposure to AMD.

The study showed that AMD has had a negative impact on the egg banks within pans and causes a loss of biodiversity.
